Job Summary
The IBM i (AS/400) Administrator is responsible for the architecture, performance, reliability, security, and lifecycle management of enterprise IBM i environments. This position goes beyond daily operations and provides advanced technical leadership in system engineering, performance optimization, OS upgrades, capacity planning, high availability/disaster recovery (HA/DR), database tuning, automation design, and integration with major enterprise applications.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
1. System Administration & Engineering
- Design, configure, and maintain IBM i LPARs, system values, storage pools, subsystems, memory pools, and devices.
- Plan and execute OS upgrades, PTF installations, and firmware updates.
- Manage IBM Power Systems hardware and HMC resources.
- Configure networking, security, SSL certificates, and system access.
- Implement automation platforms.
2. Performance Analysis & Optimization
- Conduct performance monitoring using IBM tools.
- Diagnose CPU, memory, disk, and job performance issues.
- Optimize DB2 for i and batch workloads.
- Produce capacity forecasts and performance reports.
3. High Availability & Disaster Recovery
- Administer MIMIX replication.
- Perform DR testing and maintain runbooks.
- Reduce replication lag and optimize journal management.
4. Backup, Recovery & Storage
- Manage BRMS policies and VTL workflows.
- Diagnose DASD growth and storage-related issues.
- Develop cleanup automation.
5. Security, Compliance & Audit
- Maintain profiles, authorization lists, and system security.
- Implement hardening standards.
- Support audits and remediation efforts.
6. Application, Database & Integration Support
- Support IBM i Access Client Solutions.
- Analyze DB2 for i SQL performance.
- Support third-party integrations.
7. Documentation & Change Management
- Produce engineering documentation and diagrams.
- Maintain change control compliance.
