Location: Bristol or Yeovil – other locations may be considered
Role Type: 12 months – initially
Salary: Up to £56 an hour, depending on experience

About the Role:
Our globally renowned aerospace client is seeking an Instructional Systems Designer to play a crucial role in enabling customers to safely operate and maintain our platforms and services. They will undertake a structured and analytical process to assess training needs and develop tailored training solutions for formal delivery. This includes producing high-quality training material based on a strong understanding of learning principles, the effective use of learning technologies, skills development, behavioural change, and the requirements of instructors.

As part of the Training Development Team, the post-holder will contribute to the creation of mission-critical training essential to both the company and the defence and security of our customers. The role is fast-paced and continually evolving, and the successful candidate will benefit from comprehensive personal and professional development opportunities. Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyse customer training requirements to define course objectives, content, and appropriate design methodologies.
  • Design, develop and evaluate bespoke technical training, assessments, and assurance artefacts in close collaboration with subject matter experts.
  • Deliver training solutions that meet stringent quality, regulatory and company standards, embedding a first-time-quality culture.
  • Promote and uphold safety by identifying risks, modelling safe behaviours, and supporting a proactive safety culture.
  • Collect data for proposals and contribute to reports on the design, implementation and evaluation of training programmes.
  • Coach and mentor colleagues, providing guidance on instructional design methodologies and activities.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation, exploring new instructional methods, technologies and tools to enhance training solutions.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • At least three years’ experience in designing high-quality learning solutions.
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles, instructional design and evaluation methods.
  • Experience developing and assuring instructor-led and distance-learning courseware, ideally within aerospace, energy, transport or manufacturing.
  • Working knowledge of the Systems Approach to Training (SAT), or MOD JSP 822 and the Defence Systems Approach to Training (DSAT).
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel to industry and MoD sites.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively and remotely.
  • Strong IT skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and template-based documentation.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Experience using Adobe Storyline 360.
  • Familiarity with rotary or fixed-wing aircrew, mission crew, groundcrew, mechanical or avionics systems (desirable but not essential).
